Anchorage Ski Real Estate

In late August the city of Anchorage, Alaska attempted to trade some land with a homesteader along beautiful O’Malley Road near C Street. The city is trying to acquire the land to expand what is now the 65 acre South Anchorage Sports Park that is nearby. The land will allow the city to create more ski real estate including trails for beginners, and more. The ski real estate will add a lot of appeal to the already popular park. The expansion wouldn’t just be about the ski real estate it would also be about adding new soccer fields, baseball fields, and even a dog park. These are features that will appeal to the public at large, those that ski and those that do not.

Voters of the city of Anchorage approved the land trade between the city and the homesteaders, the Klatt family. Unfortunately, the land that the city is offering the family is substantially less valuable, valued at a little more than $8 million instead of the $22.6 million the land the city is trying to acquire is worth. To make the deal the city is considering adding another piece of property into the deal to make it a fair deal for everyone. The current Klatt land is very woodsy and beautiful and will make for great ski trails and even a great golf driving range. The land is prime for skiing and will allow the South Anchorage Sports Park expand on what they already have going for them. Skiing is big business in Anchorage, and adding ski trails through the wooded land would make perfect sense.

It is hard to say if the deal will happen as the Klatt family is not in a hurry to trade their extremely valuable property for anything less than they have now. Also, the family wants to remain in their current home, which will make the city work around their existing home without building too close. Spokespeople for the city have said if the deal goes through the expansion will make the Park truly beautiful. Ski homes, hotels, and lodging will be right there where the skiers and vacationers will find them most convenient. This will be a huge draw for the tourist industry in the area, which is always a concern. Not only will the tourists appreciate the beauty of the area, but so too will the locals. If the deal goes through it will indeed be interesting to see what happens with the land.

The Klatt land is already very beautiful, but the city believes that it can not only be beautiful and valuable but can also be very effective in drawing in large tourist populations. Of course, large numbers of tourists means pumping more money into the economy so hopefully this deal for ski real estate and recreation area can be completed to the satisfaction of all involved.
